My brother Harry and I set off on a 4x4 journey taking in the coast, desert, and mountains of Oman in a Toyota Land Cruiser with a roof tent. We arrived in Muscat on a lovely sunny evening, and after picking up the car the next day we drove through a years of rain in 2 days which caused huge flooding across the east of the Arabian peninsula.
I’ve never seen more rain in my life, and with the rocky arid ground so hard it just keeps flowing. At one point we found ourselves camping at the top of a hill in the middle of a lightning storm; being the tallest metal object for miles we decided to decamp and head for safety lower down - as we descended the dirt tracks we came across some Omani shepherds heading the opposite direction telling us a flooded Wadi (river) had washed the road away. With nowhere safe to camp we followed them home and spent the evening enjoying some Omani hospitality.
The rain added a fun challenge to the trip, we had to navigate many flooded rivers and we became pros at driving through water. Once the bad weather cleared and the water levels dropped we ended up seeing a far more green Oman with beautiful full rivers which would usually be dry.
Oman should be on any adventure lover’s radar as a country to travel which offers huge amount sof fun, excitement, and beautiful scenery. Renting good quality 4x4s with camping equipment is affordable and most roads outside the main highways are dirt tracks perfect for getting lost on. Add it to your bucket list.
